Mali U-23 assistant coach Issa Kolon Coulibaly lamented his players’ mistakes in their 2-0 defeat to Algeria in M’Bour on Wednesday
, in their second Group B outing of the 2015 Africa U-23 Cup of Nations.
Unable to convert a few clear chances despite enjoying most of the possession, the young Eagles conceded twice in the last 20 minutes to end their hopes of a semifinal berth.
“The players failed to show up. We repeated the same mistakes we made in the first half against Nigeria. Nothing worked for us,” Coulibaly said at the post-match press conference.
“We had asked our players to press high up the field, but they confused speed with haste and made some fatal errors in their positioning.”
Still pointless after two games, the Malians will face Egypt in their final Group B encounter with nothing but pride at stake.
“This is all the more disappointing because these are our first two defeats since taking charge of the team,” the Malian tactician added.
“We are going to lift our heads up and play the last game with determination for the honour of our country.”
