An elated Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has said there are still many good young players back in Gabon, dedicating his historic CAF Player of the Year Award to his home country.
On Thursday night, the 26-year-old Borussia Dortmund striker dethroned four-time winner Yaya Toure to be crowned CAF African Player for 2015.
It was the first such honour for a player from oil-rich Gabon with a population of less than two million.
“We have good players and a good national team in Gabon,” declared Aubameyang after he was named the best African player for the past year and dedicated it to his country.
In 2011, Gabon won their first continental trophy when they lifted the U23 AFCON in Morocco.
The following year, the country reached the last-eight of the AFCON, which they co-hosted with neighbours Equatorial Guinea.
They will again host the AFCON next year.
