DR Congo and Ethiopia will kick-start Group B of the 2016 African Nations Championship when they meet at Stade Huye in Butare on Sunday afternoon, kick-off at 15h00 CAT.
The Leopards of DRC will be making their fourth appearance at the African Nations Championship, with their best performance arriving in 2009 when they won the inaugural competition.
They had an easy path to qualification for Rwanda 2016, with their Central Zone opponents Central African Republic pulling out of the preliminaries and giving them a walkover.
Under the guidance of coach Florent Ibenge Bounguendz they will be aiming to put up a strong showing at Rwanda 2016 and looking to reclaim the CHAN crown.
Ethiopia’s Wayla Antelopes do not have the same pedigree in the competition as their opponents, as they will be making just their second appearance at the African Nations Championship, having failed to progress from the group stage on debut in 2014.
The East Africans defeated Kenya 2-0 and Burundi 3-2 (both on aggregate) in the Central East Zone of the preliminaries to secure their place at Rwanda 2016 and will be looking to continue that form under coach Yoahnnes Sahle.
According to FIFA statistics, DRC and Ethiopia have met in four previous matches, with the former side claiming three wins and suffering one defeat.
The teams’ only previous meeting in a continental tournament saw the Leopards defeat the Wayla Antelopes 3-2 after extra time in the second round of the 1968 Africa Cup of Nations.
