Liberia's Anthony Laffor netted the only goal as they beat Djibouti 1-0 in their Group A 2017 CAF Africa Cup of Nations Qualifier match at Stade El Hadj Hassan Gouled Djibouti in Ville de Djibouti on Thursday.

Although the match was delayed by seven minutes due to unspecified reasons, the game got off to a firing start with both sides eyeing the full three points.

However, the visiting Liberians enjoyed much ball possession in the first 37 minutes keeping the hosts frustrated but they couldn't get a goal to show for their efforts.

Although the Shoremen of the Red Sea managed to find the back of the net, the Eritrean referee Idris Mehammed Osman ruled it out for offside.

It was 0-0 at the interval and after the break the Lone Stars failed to penetrate the hosts' defence despite their control of the proceedings.

But then the visiting side managed to find a goal through their Mamelodi Sundowns winger, Anthony Laffor, when he scored just before the 80th minute.

The win for the Liberians means they now have six points from three matches while the hosts remain rooted to the bottom with zero points having lost two of their opening matches.

Meanwhile, the Shoremen of the Red Sea will have to fight harder to get a win in the second leg next Tuesday which is set to be staged at Antoinette Tubman Stadium in Monrovia.
