Mali claimed first place in their Group C of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers, after recording a 1-0 victory over Equatorial Guinea in Bamako on Friday evening.

It has not been a walk in the park for the Eagles, who ultimately broke the deadlock through Udinese centre-back Molla Wagué ten minutes from time.

However, the 25-year-old’s successful attempt proved to be enough to hand Mali all three points in front of their home crowd.

National coach Alain Giresse’s men are now lying at the top of the table on 7 points, two points ahead of second-placed Benin who sealed a 2-1 away win over South Sudan on Wednesday.

And the Malians will need to raise their game when they travel to Malabo on Monday, as the Squirrels will be hot favorites to claim maximum points against South Sudan in Cotonou the day before.
