The interview:

AFRICANFOOTBALL.COM: Congratulations Sadiq on your signing a four-year contract with top Italian club AS Roma.

SADIQ UMAR: Thank you. I am happy to sign this contract, it is a reward of all the hard work I have put in all these years.

You must be delighted to get your first-ever call-up to the national team through the U23s.

Yes, I’m so blessed to be considered by coach Samson Siasia and I now hope to be at the Olympics.

So, what’s next for you?

I am on holidays in Kaduna, but on Sunday I will join the national U23 team camp in Abuja for the training tour of the United States.

You won’t be going on Roma pre-season training tour then.

No, I will be with the Olympic team and see how things play out first.

How confident are you to make the final 18-man squad for the Rio Olympics?

I am always believe in my ability and so I am confident I will prove myself with the U23 team now.

Going back to your club Roma, are you going on loan when you finally rejoin them?

We have not discussed this, possibly by the time I return to Italy we will.

Last season would most certainly be the highlight of your career.

Yes, I went through lots of experiences and lots of joy – making my debut, scoring my first goal...

But you must also be disappointed that towards the end of the season when you did not get to see much playing time.

No, I was not disappointed because as a young player that should also be a good experience for you depending on how well you react to the challenge.

I want to play all the time, but I must also understand that the team comes first.

Thank you for your time.

It’s my pleasure always
