ASEC Mimosas suffered their second loss in the group phase of the CAF Champions League as they were beaten 3-1 by ZESCO United at the Levy Mwanawasa Stadium in Ndola on Saturday afternoon.
The Zambians’ victory takes them level with Group A leaders Wydad Casablanca (who host Al Ahly later this evening) on six points, while the defeated Ivorians remain on three points.
ZESCO dominated the match from the outset but had to wait until the 33rd minute to finally break the deadlock, with the excellent Jackson Mwanza latching onto a lob over the top of the defence before steering a shot past ASEC goalkeeper Namory Diomande.
Diomande was then at fault for the second goal just four minutes later, allowing a straightforward free kick from midfielder John Ching’andu to slip through his hands and travel over the goal line – the very definition of a ‘soft goal’.
The second half saw ZESCO continue their dominance, but ASEC managed to give themselves some hope when substitute Youssouf Dao scored in the 77th minute with a clever back-heel in a crowd of players after a corner kick.
Yet the Zambians restored a two-goal advantage just two minutes later, with a substitute of their own, Idris Mbombo, finding the back of the net with a shot which took a couple of wicked deflections off ASEC defenders, leaving Diomande helpless to save it.
The teams will meet for the return fixture at the Stade Robert Champroux in Abidjan on July 27.
