A first-half blitz powered FUS Rabat to a comfortable 3-1 win over Kawkab Marrakech in their Moroccan derby at Stade de FUS on Wednesday.
The Rabat side’s victory takes them to 10 points at the top of Group B of the CAF Confederation Cup and sees them close in on a place in the final four of the continental competition. They hold a three-point lead over second-placed Etoile du Sahel of Tunisia. Kawkab are placed third on six points.
Rabat got off to a flying start, with Mohamed Nahiri scoring in the seventh and ninth minutes to give the hosts a 2-0 lead before the game had even settled into a rhythm.
On 17 minutes it was 3-0, with El Mehdi El Bassil finding the back of the net to put the game beyond the visitors before it had even reached the midway point of the first half.
A rout looked to be on the cards but FUS took their foot off the pedal and added no further goals to the score line, content with a win to move to within touching distance of the semifinals. Kawkab at least managed a consolation goal from Khalid Sekkat deep in injury time at the end of the game.
The Rabat team’s next outing in the Confed Cup will see them play away to Libya’s Al Ahly Tripoli on August 12, while Marrakech will travel to Sousse to face Etoile the following day.
