Although they were the favourites to beat South Africa, Brazil's woman's team failed to score as they drew 0-0 against South Africa in their final 2016 Rio Olympics, Group E match at Amazônia Arena in Manaus on Wednesday morning.

The outcome of the match means the hosts have seven points in the group as they consolidated their top spot.

Brazil have won two matches and drew one which qualifies them to play in the knockout stages as they are joined by Sweden and China respectively.

Although the match was the final opportunity for the Southern Africans to redeem themselves after losing their two opening matches, they couldn't penetrate the Brazilians and will now come back home without bagging a single victory.

The draw means they only have one point in the group.

Although they played well against the hosts, Banyana Banyana failed to get an opening goal to stun the Brazilian side.

Just before the interval, the South Africans nearly found the back of the net when Linda Motlhalo had a great opportunity but was dispossessed when she was preparing to take a shot.

There were no goals from either side at the interval.

In the second stanza, the hosts were all over their counterparts as Banyana's goalkeeper, Roxanne Barker produced a number of brilliant saves.

However, in the dying stages of the tie, Thembi Kgatlana was found unmarked in the opponent's half but she was denied by Brazilian net minder, Aline.

Joining the hosts in the knockout stages is Sweden who finished with four points together with the Chinese side who also bagged four points leaving the South Africans out of the tournament.
