Sudan and Gabon will meet in Khartoum on Friday evening for the final ‘centralised friendly’ in Group I of the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Sudan’s official qualification matches are complete and they will not be heading to next year’s Nations Cup: they managed just one win from their four matches and are currently placed at the bottom of Group I.
Gabon – as hosts of the 2017 tournament – have obviously qualified, with their matches in Group I not counting toward the final standings.
The Panthers have shown mixed form in their friendly matches: at home they have been impressive, holding giants Ivory Coast to a goalless draw while also defeating Sudan (4-0) and Sierra Leone (2-1), but away they have suffered successive defeats in Freetown and Bouake.
The teams’ last meeting was in Franceville in September last year, with Gabon claiming an emphatic victory thanks to a brace from Malick Evouna and a goal apiece by Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang and Samson Mbingui.
Gabon will also be using the match as preparation for the start of 2018 World Cup qualifiers early in October.
