Burkina Faso defender Steeve Yago has apologized for his action during their game against Botswana at the Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou on Sunday.

The right-back punched Botswana midfielder Lebogang Ditsile in the face and he was sent off in their final 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier.

The Stallions of Burkina Faso overcame a stubborn Zebras side 2-1 to win Group D and book their place at next year's AFCON finals.

“Dear everyone, I would like to present my apologies to Lebogang Ditsele, the Burkina Faso Football Federation, my teammates and all our fans who witnessed my regrettable action in the Nations Cup match against Botswana," Yago said on his official Twitter account.

“After the ball had passed and we had been given a free kick, I reacted inappropriately. This is not appropriate for a football pitch and I regret it profoundly.”

It remains to be seen whether the Toulouse full-back will be further banned by CAF which could see him miss the 2017 AFCON finals.
