There are strong indications that FC IfeanyiUbah goalkeeper Ikechukwu Ezenwa will take the place of injured Carl Ikeme for Saturday’s clash against Algeria after he was put through special drills in Tuesday evening training.
Eagles trainer Alloy Agu pushed Ezenwa through, while the other goalkeepers Daniel Akpeyi and Dele Alampasu trained with the rest of the squad.
All attention was on the former Nigeria U20 shot stopper and nothing was left to chance by his trainer himself a former Eagles goalkeeper and captain.
The agile goalkeeper himself has maintained he is ready for the big job on Saturday.
“I have understudied Carl Ikeme and I will give my best for my country to qualify for the 2018 World Cup, if I’m opportuned to be in goal,” said the 28-year-old Ezenwa, who played alongside the likes of Brown Ideye and Elderson Echiejile at the 2007 FIFA U20 World Cup in Canada.
“I’m not under pressure because it’s something I have been doing for some time now and I am confident I will prove myself again.”
Ezenwa has been in rich vein of form after he posted five-star displays for the NPFL All-Stars on a playing tour of Spain in August.
It was a performance that will attract interest of Spanish second division club Cadiz.
