“Yaya was recently in Malta in connection with their citizenship,” a top source informed.
Maltese citizenship will confer European citizenship to the Ivorian star and four-time African Footballer of the Year.
The 33-year-old Yaya was born in Bouake, Cote d’Ivoire and has played for several top clubs like Barcelona, Monaco and Olympiacos.
His troubles at Manchester City following the arrival of Pep Guardiola are well documented.
The island of Malta is a favourite holiday destination, attracting more than a million visitors every year.
And in football terms, the island-nation has begun to make some in-roads into top reckoning.
Everton star Yannick Bolasie featured for Maltese club Floriana between 2007 and 2008 and today he is a top star in the Premier League.
Nigeria youth international Stanley Ohawuchi also played for another Maltese club Sliema wanderers, from 2012 to 2014, before he headed to Egypt, where he is now featuring for Zamalek.
Zamalek are expected to pay Egyptian club Wadi Degla $1.5 million to sign Ohawuchi permanently.
