Al Ahly beat Zamalek 2-0 in the Egyptian Premier League at the Petrosport Stadium on Thursday to maintain a nine year unbeaten run in the Cairo derby.

A first half goal from Moemen Zakareya and a second half stoppage time goal from Nigerian substitute Junior Ajayi handed Al Ahly the win.

Al Ahly were last beaten in the league by Zamalek in 2007.

Moreover, the win sees Al Ahly cement their place at the top of the table, 11 points better off than third placed Zamalek who do have two games in hand.

The loss was Zamalek’s first of the league season while Al Ahly remains unbeaten in 17 games.

The league will now stop for more than a month as Egypt take part in the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations in Gabon which is set to start on January 14.
