Nigeria-born US star Toni Payne has been drafted by FC Kansas City in the second round of the National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) Draft.

She was the number 13 overall pick.

Described by one of the TV commentators as “a big-time player”, Toni said she was delighted by the opportunity to now play professionally.

“It’s an amazing opportunity, I’m really excited for this chapter in my life,” she said while acknowledging the contributions of her family, coaches and teammates for her development.

Dashing striker Payne has said she wishes to change her international allegiance to Nigeria after she has represented US at U17 and U23 levels.

Another Nigeria-born forward Ifeoma Onumonu was the ninth overall pick and she was drafted by Boston Breakers, while Catrina Atanda was 30th overall pick who was drafted to Sky Blue FC.

The NWSL is in its fifth season.
