Congolese Association Football Federation (FECOFA) president Constant Omari has backed the senior national team head coach Florent Ibenge.

The tactician guided the Leopards of DR Congo to the 2017 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) quarter-finals where they were beaten 2-1 by Ghana in Gabon over the weekend.

The Leopards went into the tournament with high hopes having finished third at 2015 finals and also won the 2016 African Nations Championship (CHAN) under Ibenge.

"I will continue with the same coach Florent Ibenge who has done a tremendous job at the helm of the team," SuperSport.com.

"He won us CHAN and showed a great performance in the 2017 tournament even though we expected to go higher Ghana were the better side.

"We cannot blame our elimination on the coach as the team had the chance of winning the game in the first half but they failed to do so," Omari said.

"The team has had a good run though I know many of our fans are disappointment as they expected us to go all the way to the final but sometimes you get different results in football.

"As a federation (FECOFA) we want to thank the players for their commitment and dedication we will go back home and prepare well for 2019."

Leopards are currently sitting at the top of their 2018 FIFA World Cup qualifying group with two games played.
