The first leg matches of the 2017 CAF Confederation Cup’s preliminary round were brought to a close with nine matches on Sunday.

From a South African point of view, SuperSport United recorded a creditable goalless draw away to Madagascar’s Elgeco Plus and will fancy their chances of winning the tie outright when they host the return match in Tshwane next weekend.

Along with United, Zimbabwe’s Ngezi Platinum and Ivorians Sporting Gagnoa were the only teams to avoid defeats on the road, as they drew 1-1 at Pamplemousses of Mauritius and Burkina Faso’s Sonabel respectively.

The rest of Sunday’s matches went the way of the home teams: Ifeanyi Ubah defeated Egypt’s Al Masry, while fellow Nigerians Wikki Tourists went down 2-0 away to Sierre Leone’s RSLAF.

Ghana’s Bechem United edged MC Alger 1-0, APEJES of Cameroon beat Senegal’s Niary Tally by the same score, Defence Force of Ethiopia edged Young Sports Academy 1-0, and Zanzibar’s KVZ defeated Burundi’s Messager Ngozi 2-1.

The 20 preliminary round ties will be completed with second-leg matches next weekend, 17-19 February.
