Madagascar have taken a major step toward the next round of 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers after securing a 1-0 away win over Sao Tome & Principe on Wednesday evening.
Barea defeated their hosts at the Estádio Nacional 12 de Julho in a preliminary round, first leg encounter.
The only strike of the game arrived in the 61st minute of the match and was an own-goal by an unidentified Sao Tome player.
Madagascar will be confident of at least defending their advantage – if not adding to it – when they host the return game at Stade Municipal de Mahamasina in Antananarivo on Sunday.
The aggregate winners will advance into Group A of the qualifiers, where they will face Sudan, Senegal and Equatorial Guinea.
