Zanaco held Al Ahly to a goalless draw in their CAF Champions League Group D opener at the Borg El-Arab Stadium in Alexandria on Saturday night.
The Zambians ‘parked the bus’ in Egypt and came away with a deserved point after a highly disciplined performance in which they managed to stymie the eight-time continental champions.
For the Red Devils, the stalemate is a disappointing result and leaves them two points behind Morocco’s Wydad Casablanca, who claimed first place in the group on Friday night when they beat Coton Sport 2-0.
Having to already make up ground on a North African rival is not something which will please Al Ahly coach Hossam El-Badry, who will feel his side created enough chances to win the game on the night.
The teams will return to Champions League action later this month: Al Ahly will be away to Cameroon’s Coton Sport on May 23, while Zanaco will host Wydad in Lusaka the following day.
