Zambia got their 2017 FIFA U20 World Cup campaign off to the perfect start by defeating Portugal 2-1 at the Jeju World Cup Stadium on Sunday, to move top of Group C.

The African champions survived a late surge by the two-time World Champs to cause what many will regard as a major upset.

Having watched Guinea suffer a 3-0 defeat to hosts, South Korea, on Saturday the Junior Chipolopolo would have been eager to make amends for the African continent - and so they did.

Edward Chilufya opened the scoring after 51 minutes. Superb skill by Fashion Sakala down the left flank creating the opportunity as Diogo Costa could only succeed in palming his resulting shot straight at Chilufya who made no mistake from close range.

Sakala doubled Zambia's lead in the 76th minute; bursting into the area before powering an unstoppable left-footed shot past the Portuguese goal-minder.

Zambia only had themselves to blame for what was a nervy ending to the clash as a mistake at the back resulting in Hélder José Castro Ferreira reducing the deficit in stoppage time.

But in the end it would prove a mere consolation as Zambia claimed all three points on the day.

Next up for Zambia is a clash against Iran on Wednesday.
