Roberto Mancini has admitted that he tried to sign Ivory Coast midfielder Yaya Toure for Internazionale.
The Italian manager, who worked with Toure at Manchester City, quit Inter at the start of the season but not before he tried to temp the Elephants legend to Milan.
"I tried to bring him to Inter but I do not know why he did not come,” said Mancini.
“The first year was tied to the contract, there was some difficulty, but last year there was a real chance to take him to Italy.
"He did not arrive and I do not know why. He is a champion like (Andrea) Pirlo.
“At his age despite being 34, he is physically monstrous, serious and can play at high levels, and now it seems they want to renew him - he's a great champion."
Toure will be out of contract at Manchester City from June, but the club may well offer him an extension given his strong form in the second half of the season.
