A goal from Gerard Phiri handed Malawi a 1-0 win over Comoros in a CAF African Cup of Nations, Group B qualifying match at the Kamuzu Stadium in Blantyre on Saturday.

The victory gets Malawi off to the perfect start in their Afcon qualifying campaign with a solid three points from their first match.

Comoros, on the other hand, will look to bounce back in their next Afcon qualifying tie as they now have zero points in Group B from one game.

The game in Blantrye on Saturday, though, was not the greatest footballing spectacle with chances on goal few and far between.

The home side did start the better of the two teams, but proved to be wasteful in front goal. That was until the half hour mark when a well-worked passing move from Malawi resulted in Gerard Phiri finding the back of the net, 1-0.

Malawi continued to control the opening half, but could not add a second goal to the scoreline before the break.

The second half saw Comoros playing better football as they gained more possession of the ball, but their decision making in the final third was poor which saw them really unable to trouble the Malawi goalkeeper.

While the second half produced little in terms of goal mouth action, the home side produced a solid defensive display to hold onto their 1-0 lead and claim a win in their first Afcon 2019 qualifying match.

The next group of qualifying games will only take place next year March where Comoros will host Cameroon and Malawi will travel to Morocco.
