AfricanFootball reviews an action-packed day in the CAF Club competitions on Wednesday and early Thursday morning, with six matches completed across the continent.
The first Champions League clash saw Zambia’s Zanaco put themselves within touching distance of a place in the quarterfinals with a 1-0 win away to Cameroonian giants Coton Sport, courtesy of a last-gasp goal from Saith Sakala.
In Sudan, Al Hilal played to a fourth successive draw in Group A as they held Tunisian giants Etoile Sahel 1-1 thanks to an injury-time equaliser from Mohamed Bashir. The result means Etoile lead the group with eight points, while Ferroviario Beira, Al Merrikh and Al Hilal all have four points.
In Group B, USM Alger and Al Ahli Tripoli claimed notable home wins over Zamalek (2-0) and CAPS United (4-2) respectively to move level at the top of the pool on seven points apiece.
Defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns held Tunisia’s Esperance de Tunis goalless in their Group C clash in Rades. The result means the Blood and Gold lead the way with eight points, while ‘Downs are level in second place with Ethiopia’s Saint George on five points apiece.
The only Confederation Cup match of the day saw three-time champions CS Sfaxien of Tunisia claim a valuable 1-1 away draw at South Africa’s Platinum Stars, putting them just one point behind MC Alger at the top of Group B.
Both CAF Club competitions will have their penultimate round of group stage matches played next weekend, 30 June to 2 July.
