Ghanaian club Asante Kotoko were involved in a fatal traffic accident last night when their team bus struck a stationery vehicle on the return trip from a league match against Inter Allies.
The vehicle was en route to Kumasi from Accra, where the team had suffered a 1-0 defeat, with the accident occurring in Nkawkaw.
“The accident occurred around 9:45pm at Nkawkaw, when our bus ran into a stationary vehicle. Personnel on the bus are generally fine. Some are however receiving treatment at the Holy Family Hospital, Nkawkaw,” Asante posted on their official Twitter page.
“Management requests that fans stay calm. A full statement on the incident will be issued in due course.”
It has been confirmed this morning that Kotoko’s assistant kit man, Kofi Asare, was sadly killed in the accident.
“Got three ambulances to rush the driver, [Steven] Polack and [Godwin] Ablordey [coach and assistant coach respectively] to Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital,” Asante representative Thomas Boakye-Agyemang is quoted by GHANASoccernet.
“Okwahu United gave their bus to us so we sent the injured players to KATH too,” he added. “Our Assistant Equipment Officer Kofi Asare is, however, gone.”
