Gambia and Mali played to a goalless draw in the first leg of their 2018 African Nations Championship at the Independence Stadium in Bakau on Saturday.
It was not the most entertaining of games with both sides poor in front of goal and unable to create any significant goal scoring chances.
The two sides will meet again next week in Mali for the second leg where the winner on aggregate will face either Mauritania or Liberia in the final round of the qualifying campaign.
Liberia will host Mauritania on Sunday in their quest to reach Kenya for the CHAN tournament in Kenya next year.
Mali have qualified for the last three CHAN finals with their best finish coming last year when they lost to DR Congo in the final.
Gambia are one of the African sides that have never qualified for the CHAN finals.
