Libya progressed to CAF African Nations Championship in Kenya next year following a 1-1 draw against Algeria in a second leg, third round qualifier at the Stade Taïeb Mhiri in Sfax on Friday night.
The result combined with Libya’s 2-1 win in the first leg of their third round qualifier last weekend in Constantine means they will be at the tournament proper in 2018 after a 3-2 aggregate scoreline.
Algeria came into the game knowing that they had to score at least two goals to stand any chance of winning the match on aggregate, and they started positively on Friday night as they controlled the flow of the game.
The Fennec Foxes made their pressure tell with the opening goal in the 26th minute thanks to a strike from Sofiane Bendebka, 1-0.
Algeria continued to dominate the game, but were unable to add to the scoreline and instead some slack defending at the end of the half saw Libya level matters in the second minute of injury time, 1-1.
The second half saw the Fennec Foxes pushing numbers forward in search of the goal which would give them a lifeline, but Libya defended stoutly and managed to keep Algeria at bay as the match ended 1-1.
Libya will now head to Kenya in 2018 hoping to repeat what they achieved at the CHAN tournament in 2014 by winning the event.
