A late goal through Fabrice Kanda ensured Ferroviasrio Da Beira drew 1-1 against USM Alger in their CAF Champions League quarter-final, first leg match on Saturday at Estádio do Chiveve in Beira.

In the wake of the draw, the two sides are set to meet in a second leg to be staged at Stade du 5 Juillet 1962 al-Jazā’ir in Algiers on Saturday, September 23.

Although the hosts pushed for an early goal as they wanted to ensure they are in the driving seat, coach Paul Put's men were stubborn at the back.

Alger were dealt a huge blow when Hamzaoui and coach Put had to replace him after sustaining an injury with four minutes to go to the interval.

With both sides chasing an early goal in the opening half, there were no clear cut scoring chances and it was 0-0 at half time.

However, their return from the tunnel saw the Algerians putting the hosts under pressure and they managed to break the deadlock.

Oussama Darfalou found the back of the net in the 63rd minute as he managed to beat the Ferroviario goalkeeper after an assist by Mokhtar Benmoussa.

The hosts pushed for an equaliser and their efforts were rewarded in the 89th minute through Kanda.

The two giants fought hard for a winning goal in the dying stages of the match, but none could find the back of the net.
