Cape Town City defeated Polokwane City 1-0 in an Absa Premiership match at the Cape Town Stadium on Friday night.

As a result, the Citizens climb up to fourth spot on the league standings, while Rise and Shine remain 14th on the log.

The visitors threatened first through Salulani Phiri, whose effort forced City goalkeeper Sage Stephens into a comfortable save just nine minutes into the match.

The Citizens were able to keep possession well, but they were struggling to unlock the Rise and Shine defence which was led by the experienced Thapelo Tshilo.

Stephens was also called into action in the 22nd minute and he pulled off a decent save to deny Polokwane full-back Ndivhuwo Ravhuhali's free-kick.

With seven minutes left before half-time, Lehlohonolo Majoro found some space outside the Polokwane box and he hit the upright.

Nevertheless, the score was 0-0 at half-time between City and Polokwane.

An action-packed second-half followed as the home side took control of the match with Lyle Lakay narrowly missing the target.

His City team-mate Majoro also came close in the 71st minute with curling shot missing the Polokwane goal-posts.

Majoro thought he had snatched a late winner in the 88th minute, but the goal was disallowed as the striker was ruled offside.

However, the striker did score the winning goal in stoppage time as he converted from the spot-kick after City were awarded a late penalty.

City ran out 1-0 winners over Polokwane after containing the visitors in the closing stages of the encounter.
