Egyptian giants Al Ahly suffered a 2-1 defeat to Tunisia’s Etoile Sportive du Sahel away from home in a CAF Champions League, first leg semifinal match at the Stade Olympique de Sousse on Sunday, October 1.
The home side got off to a good start and managed to open the scoring in the 16th
minute when Alaya Brigui found the back of the net, 1-0.
Etoile Sahel continued to control the match after that, but their decision making in the final third was poor which meant they were unable to double their lead before the half time break.
The Egyptians came out a much better side in the second half and managed to apply pressure on the home side’s goal.
Al Ahly were rewarded for their efforts in the 65th
minute when Salah Gomaa equalised a minute after coming off the bench, 1-1.
The Egyptian side’s joy, however, was short-lived when Etoile Sahel re-took the lead ten minutes later courtesy of a goal from Mohamed Ben Amor, 2-1.
Al Ahly tried to find their way back into the game after that, but Etoile Sahel managed to hold on for the victory.
The two sides will meet again in the second leg in three weeks’ time with the winner on aggregate progressing into the final of the CAF Champions League.
Despite suffering defeat Al Ahly will be happy with the fact that they got an away goal will look to make that count in the return leg.
