South Africa defeated Burkina Faso 3-1 in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification (CAF) Group D match at the FNB Stadium on Saturday afternoon.

However, Bafana Bafana remain fouth on the group table despite their convincing victory, while the Stallions also remain at the top of the standings.

The hosts took the lead just a minute into the match after the Stallions were caught ball watching in the box.

Percy Tau broke the deadlock with a close-range header from a long throw-in making it 1-0 to South Africa.

Kamohelo Mokotjo and Bongani Zungu were shield in front of the South Africa defence.

Burkina Faso attackers Bertrand Traore and his brother, Alain found it difficult to penetrate the home side's backline.

South Africa doubled their lead in the 34th minute when Themba Zwane beat Burkina Faso goalkeeper Kouakou Herve Koffi to make it 2-0.

The hosts were oozing with confidence and they extended their lead just before the break and this time it was Sibusiso Vilakazi, who scored.

The score was 3-0 to South Africa at half-time following an entertaining first-half in Johannesburg.

South Africa continued to look dangerous on transition with Zwane missing a glorious opportunity two minutes after the restart.

At the other end, South Africa keeper Itumeleng Khune pulled off two great saves to deny Burkina Faso forward Bertrand Traore within six minutes.

The hosts were reduced to 10 men when Zungu was sent off for violate conduct by Cameroonian match referee Sidi Alioum in the 67th minute.

Burkina Faso did most of the attacking in the closing stages of the match, but Khune denied Stephane Aziz Ki and Aristide Bance.

However, Burkina Faso did grab a late consolation goal through Alain Traore, who scored with a good free-kick and ultimately, South Africa ran out 3-1 winners.
