New Botswana captain Simisani Mathumo has explained why he voted for Portugal and Real Madrid CF superstar Cristiano Ronaldo.
The 32-year-old marksman was named 2017 Best FIFA Men's Player at a FIFA ceremony which was held at the London Palladium in England on Monday.
The Botswana Football Association (BFA) released the following statement about Township Rollers defender Mathumo.
A statement read: "Senior national team captain Cristiano Ronaldo has replicated the highest level of professionalism and consistency for club and country in the past 12months, and that's the reason why Mathumo gave him his vote.
"Mathumo also highlighted that Ronaldo's form was important in securing him the vote as his contribution to Real Madrid and Portugal secured important titles. Mathumo says the fighting spirit that the Portugal skipper has is desirable and hopes the Zebras camp can adopt the same spirit to fight and defend the Zebras badge in the 2019 Africa cup of Nations campaign.
"Mathumo says the support from Real fans and Portugal fans was also key to making the Worlds best player for 2017 believe in his abilities and edged his country man to love the local game and the National teams to allow them to put performances for the Nation."
