Maritzburg United and Platinum Stars will open the last 16 round of this year’s Telkom Knockout when they meet at the Harry Gwala Stadium on 27 October 2017, kick-off at 20h00.
Maritzburg and Stars have met in just two previous cup matches. Their first was at the same stage of the 2013 Telkom Knockout, with the Rustenburg team claiming a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Henrico Botes and Robert Ng’ambi, while the second was in the 2014 Nedbank Cup later the same season. That match ended in a 1-1 draw after extra time and was won 3-1 on penalties by United.
Across all competitions, the Team of Choice and Dikwena have met in 25 matches since 2005/06. The Rustenburg side has claimed 11 wins compared to six for their KwaZulu-Natal counterparts, while eight matches have been drawn.
The teams last met back in August in the opening round of this season’s Absa Premiership, when goals from Deolin Mekoa and Lebogang Maboe took the Team of Choice to a 2-0 victory at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
Maritzburg have never won the League Cup, nor reached the final, while last season they were eliminated in the last 16 round after losing on penalties to Kaizer Chiefs.
Stars have been one of the more successful teams in the TKO era, winning the competition twice (2006 and 2013) and ending as runners-up once (2014), while in the 2016 edition they fell out in the last 16 round after losing 3-1 at Baroka FC.
In terms of current form, Maritzburg have played just one competitive match this month - a goalless draw away to Chippa United on October 18 - while Stars have recorded respectable away draws in successive league games at Orlando Pirates and Free State Stars.
