Bloemfontein Celtic and SuperSport United will have a rare cup showdown when the teams meet in the last 16 of the Telkom Knockout, set for the Dr Molemela Stadium on 28 October 2017, kick-off at 18h00.
Despite a rivalry which dates back to 1990, Celtic and SuperSport have met in just two cup games. The first was in the final of the 2005/06 SAA Supa8, with the Bloemfontein club claiming a 1-0 victory, while the second was in the 2008/09 Telkom Knockout: a match which featured three own goals ended 2-2 before Phunya Sele Sele triumphed 4-3 on penalties.
Across all competitions, the teams have clashed in 49 matches since 1990. Celtic have claimed 12 wins compared to 11 for United, while a whopping 26 matches have finished in draws. Those stalemates include two goalless matches in the teams’ two league meetings last season. In fact, seven of the teams’ last 10 matches have finished level.
Celtic famously won the Telkom Knockout in 2012, but last year they exited the competition in the first round after going down at the hands of eventual champions Cape Town City.
United won their only Telkom Knockout title in 2014, though they very nearly claimed a second last year: Matsatsantsa went all the way to the final before losing 2-1 to Cape Town City.
In terms of current form, Celtic’s two matches this month brought them a 1-0 win at Cape Town City and a 2-1 loss against Ajax Cape Town last weekend, while SuperSport have not been in domestic action at all, but did claim an impressive 4-2 aggregate triumph over Club Africain in the CAF Confederation Cup, including a 3-1 victory in Rades, Tunisia, on Sunday night.
