Polokwane City and Ajax Cape Town will have their first cup clash when they battle for a place in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout. The teams will meet at the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium on 28 October 2017, kick-off at 15h30.
Though this will be the first cup meeting of Polokwane and Ajax, the clubs have been regular combatants in top flight league football since the former’s promotion to the PSL in 2013. Their nine Absa Premiership matches have produced five wins for the Urban Warriors and just one for Rise and Shine, with three matches drawn.
The teams’ most recent meeting was earlier this season, with Ajax claiming a 2-0 home win (their first of the 2017/18 campaign) at Cape Town Stadium in mid September thanks to a brace from striker Prince Nxumalo.
Rise and Shine’s lone win in this rivalry arrived in the teams’ very first meeting back in the 2013/14 season, as the Limpopo side claimed a 2-0 home win thanks to goals from Thapelo Tshilo and Sphesihle Nzimande.
Polokwane have never won the Telkom Knockout nor reached the final, and last year they were beaten 2-0 by Mamelodi Sundowns in the last 16 round. Ajax, meanwhile, are two-time winners of the League Cup (2000 and 2008), but they also fell from the 2016 edition at the first hurdle, losing 1-0 to eventual runners-up SuperSport United.
In terms of current form, Polokwane have recorded a win over AmaZulu and 2-2 draw away to high-flying Golden Arrows this month, while Ajax bounced back from a 2-0 loss to Free State Stars with a much-needed 2-1 win over Bloemfontein Celtic last weekend.
