Africa's best player, Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, will play no part in the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia.

The continent's outstanding player, who has scored 15 goals in 14 appearances for Borussia Dortmund across all competitions this season, failed in his attempt to lead Gabon to a first ever world showpiece.

Born in France, Aubameyang opted to play for the Panthers at national level and what might have appeared as an obvious choice eight years ago - one wonders if he doesn't rue the decision.

Over the past week we have seen Wissam Ben Yedder snub Tunisia's approach, with the Sevilla forward desperate to represent Les Blues.

In fact, many of Africa's top players weren't even born on the continent with the likes of Hakim Ziyech (Morocco) & Riyad Mahrez (Algeria) born in the Netherlands and France respectively.

An added luxury or curse - most of Africa's 'cream' qualify to represent two and sometimes even more nations at international level.

What might seem an obvious choice to us, might not be as straightforward for the footballer in question and while Aubameyang might live to regret his decision - who says he does?
