Platinum Stars and Bloemfontein Celtic will meet for a rare cup game when they cross swords in the quarterfinals of the Telkom Knockout at Royal Bafokeng Stadium on 4 November 2017, kick-off at 15h30.

Stars and Celtic have met in just two previous cup games: the first was a last 16 clash in the 2006 Telkom Knockout which ended 1-1 before Dikwena won 4-3 on post-match penalties, while the second saw the Rustenburg side claim a 1-0 win in Bloemfontein in a last 32 clash for the 2011 Nedbank Cup.

Across all competitions, the teams have met 28 times since the 2004/05 season. Phunya Sele Sele have claimed 10 wins compared to nine for Dikwena, while nine matches have been drawn. The clubs last met in two league matches last season, with Celtic winning 1-0 in Rustenburg, while Stars claimed revenge with a 3-0 win in Bloemfontein in the return game.

Stars booked their place in this season’s TKO quarterfinals thanks to a penalty shootout win over Maritzburg United last weekend - the game finished goalless after extra time. Dikwena have been one of the more successful teams in the TKO era, winning the competition twice (2006 and 2013) and ending as runners-up once (2014).

Celtic, meanwhile, caused one of the more notable upsets last weekend when they fought back from two goals down against ‘Cup Kings’ SuperSport United to draw 2-2 after extra time, before going on to claim the last 16 tie on penalties.

Phunya Sele Sele famously won their only Telkom Knockout title in 2012, but will feel they have a great chance of challenging for another this year, especially after their elimination of Matsatsantsa.

Stars come into the match having racked up their first outright win of the season, a 1-0 home triumph over Ajax Cape Town in midweek, while Celtic edged Maritzburg United 1-0 at home.
