Polokwane City defeated Orlando Pirates 4-2 on penalties following a 2-2 draw in a Telkom Knockout Cup quarter-final match at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday night.
The win sees Rise and Shine book their place in this year's semi-finals, while the Buccaneers are eliminated from the competition.
It took only two minutes for the home side to break the deadlock - silencing the Pirates fans inside the Mecca of South African football.
Rendani Ndou headed into an empty following a good cross by Rodney Ramagalela to make it 1-0 to Polokwane in the second minute.
However, Rise and Shine's lead only lasted for 11 minutes as Ntsikelelo Nyauza scored with a powerful low shot to make it 1-1 for Pirates.
The hosts should have taken the lead for the first time after there were awarded a penalty in the 25th minute, but Mpho Makola missed the target.
Polokwane then managed to regain their lead in the 41st minute when Ndou fired past Pirates goalkeeper Wayne Sandilands to make it 2-1.
Pirates then pressed Polokwane and they restored parity again, and this time it was Makola, who scored in stoppage time. The score was 2-2 at the interval.
The Buccaneers enjoyed more possession in the first 15 minutes of the second-half as they searched for their third goal.
However, Rise and Shine looked dangerous on transition with hard-running striker Ramagalela spearheading their attack.
Polokwane's substitute keeper Harold Ndlovu and his Pirates counter-part Sandilands produced late saves to ensure that the game went into extra-time.
There were no goals in extra-time and the match went into a penalty shootout. Polokwane went on to win 4-2 on penalties.
