Former Nigeria international Michael Emenalo has stepped down from his position as Chelsea’s technical director.
According to the Telegraph, Emenalo brought his 10-year association with the Blues to an end on Monday, following their 1-0 victory over Manchester United on the weekend.
The former Super Eagles defender reportedly made the decision to quit during the European summer, but delayed his departure to have a minimal impact on the team.
Emenalo is a close friend of club owner Roman Abramovich, who asked the 52-year-old to reconsider, but he insisted that he needs to spend more time with his young family.
It is also speculated that Emenalo’s departure is due to strained relations with head coach Antonio Conte, who wants greater control of transfer proceedings.
Emenalo represented Nigeria at the 1994 World Cup and first joined Chelsea’s technical team in 2007.
