Burkina Faso secured a 4-0 win over Cape Verde in the 2018 FIFA World Cup Qualification (CAF) Group D match at the Stade du 4 Août in Ouagadougou on Tuesday night.

As a result, Burkina Faso and Cape Verde finish second and third respectively in Group D, with both nations having failed to qualify.

The home side applied some pressure on the Blue Sharks defence in the early stages of the encounter.

Alain Traore, who had scored for the Stallions against South Africa in their previous Group D match, had a chance score in the 11th minute.

However, the former AS Monaco attacker's shot was well blocked by the Cape Verde defenders.

The Blue Sharks had a rare chance in the 28th minute and Babanco placed his left-footed shot wide of the target.

Babanco's team-mate also missed the target seven minutes later as Cape Verde looked to press the hosts.

The visitors were left to rue those missed chances, as Prejuce Nakoulma scored in the 46th minute.

Burkina Faso were deservedly leading 1-0 at the interval against Cape Verde.

The Stallions continued their dominance over the Blue Sharks after the restart and they managed to double their lead 13 minutes into the second half.

It was Nakoulma once again who hit the back of the net and this time the forward scored with a header to make it 2-0 to Burkina Faso.

The visitors were struggling to contain the home side, who managed to extend their lead through Nakoulma.

The France-based striker made it 3-0 in the 62nd minute with a good header - grabbing his hat-trick in the process.

Ultimately, Burkina Faso ran out 4-0 winners after Banou Diawara snatched a late goal with a header in stoppage time.
