Mario Lemina will play no part in Southampton's English Premier League game against Liverpool this Saturday, head coach Mauricio Pellegrino has confirmed.

There was hope that the Gabon international would return to action following the international break, but the Saints boss announced that although his condition has improved over the past few days, the 24-year-old is not yet ready for selection.

The former Juventus midfielder is currently nursing an ankle injury according to the club's official website - sustained in training.

"Mario Lemina was training well, much better than before," Pellegrino said. "But he will not be ready to play Saturday.

"We look at his problem three weeks ago and he's improved a lot [since then]. But it is too soon to put him on the pitch," he concluded.

Lemina has played seven games for the Saints this season following his move from the Serie A champions.
