Bidvest Wits captain Thulani Hlatshwayo says that Bloemfontein Celtic are the favourites for this weekend’s Telkom Knockout final.
Wits sit at the bottom of South Africa’s Absa Premiership after a terrible start to the defence of their title, while Celtic are placed in the top half of the table and have made impressive progress under new coach Veselin Jelusic.
The sides will meet in the Telkom Knockout final this coming Saturday, as they compete for the last piece of silverware up for grabs in 2017.
“Celtic are the favourites,” said Hlatshwayo at the launch of the Discovery Walter Sisulu Soccer Challenge in Soweto on Monday, as quoted by Kick-Off.
“Sometimes if you look at the history, teams that are not doing well in the league end up winning trophies.
“Looking at where we are, it’s easy for them to underestimate us because we have not been doing well in the league. But as a team we have to make sure we bring silverware.
“Coach Gavin [Hunt] has said that he wishes the wins in the Telkom Knockout were three points, then we could have been sitting in a proper position.
“The MTN8 is gone for us and we have to go all the way to win this final on Saturday.
“If you look at our history in the Telkom Knockout, we have been knocked out in the first round. It’s good to see that the team has managed to go to the final and the guys are raring to win this cup.”
‘Tyson’ added, “Celtic has been doing well. They have a lot of speedy and skilful players. We have to make sure that we bring our A-game on the day.”
