Former Argentina coach Cesar Luis Menotti believes his national team will defeat Nigeria when the teams meet in the 2018 World Cup.

The tournament draw last week saw the Super Eagles placed in a group alongside the South American heavyweights for the fifth time.

Argentina have won all four of the teams’ previous World Cup matches and Menotti, who led the Albiceleste to the 1978 title, believes that trend will continue.

“The group is satisfactory, we are better than in the ‘78 World Cup that we had Italy, Hungary and France,” Menotti said in an interview with Super Miter Deportivo.

”It would not be surprising if Argentina loses with Croatia, but against Iceland Nigeria are six points guaranteed.”

Menotti shrugged off Argentina’s defeat to Nigeria in a Russia-based friendly last month.

”The friendly with Nigeria does not count too much, they are dangerous but they never reach their potential.”

The teams will meet in Saint Petersburg in the final round of Group D match on June 26.
