Zanzibar handed Rwanda a 3-1 drubbing in their opening Group A 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge encounter held at Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Tuesday.
The victory for Zanzibar sees them sitting at number one in the group with three points from one match, separated from Kenya on goal difference.
Zanzibar's upcoming encounter is against Tanzania on Thursday and they will hope to bag another win to boost their semi-final aspirations.
Coach Vítězslav Nemetz's side started the contest on a high as they dictated the terms and put their opponents under pressure from the first whistle.
Their efforts were rewarded when Yahaya Mudathir converted in the 35th minute to ensure their efforts were rewarded upfront.
Although the Amavubi showed signs of resilience, they could not level the matters in the first half as it was 1-0 at half time.
However after two minutes into the second stanza, Muhadjir Hakizimana brought relief to their camp as he found to back of the net to make it 1-1.
The East African nation fought back to claim the lead for the second and managed to penetrate their Rwandan defence in the 54th minute.
Mohamed Issa made it 2-1 to ensure they are back in front and they did not take their off the pedal towards the dying stages of the match.
With four minutes to go, Kassim Khamis made it 3-1 as they cruised to their first win in this year's edition of the regional tournament.
In the wake of the defeat, coach Antoine Hey's Amavubi now occupy the bottom of the five-team group with zero points from two outings so far – their next match is against Libya on Thursday.
