Uganda have risen to the top of Group B at the 2017 CECAFA Cup by thrashing South Sudan 5-1 at the Bukhungu Stadium in Kakamega on Friday.

The Cranes opened up an early two-goal lead thanks to strikes from Milton Karisa and Hood Kaweesa.

South Sudan hit back on 26 minutes to give themselves a glimmer of hope, with Atak Lual finding the back of the net.

However, they were soon 3-1 down when Derrick Nsibambi restored Uganda’s two-goal cushion.

And the Cranes added to their advantage in the second half, with Nsibambi completing his brace in the 58th minute, while the fifth goal was netted by Nicholas Wadada in the 86th.

The result sees Uganda topping Group B on four points, as they lead Burundi on goal difference. Ethiopia have three points, while South Sudan are bottom and have been mathematically eliminated from semifinal contention.

Uganda will complete their group stage campaign with a clash against Ethiopia on Sunday, while South Sudan and Burundi will meet the following day.
