Vincent Oburu's early goal for Kenya ensured they have secured a spot in the 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge semifinals.
The Harambee Stars went to the encounter seeking a must win and they beat Tanzania 1-0 on Monday at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos.
The win sees them sitting at number one in Group A with eight points from four matches and will be joined by the second-placed Zanzibar in the last four.
In the semifinals, the East Africans will now meet the Les Hirondelles of Burundi on Thursday, December 14.
Coming to this encounter, coach Paul Put's men found the back of the net in the 19th minute after dominating the opening stages of the tie.
They went to the interval enjoying their slender lead.
Upon their return from the tunnel, Tanzania dominated the proceedings with ball possession going their way - they had 63% compared to 37 of the hosts.
However, they failed to break the hosts' defence in search of an equaliser and have exited the tournament with three losses and one draw.
Kenya committed a number of fouls in the match, with 14, but the Taifa Stars could not create clear cut chances in front of goal.
In the end, the hosts held on to their slender lead to secure a last four berth and will want to reach the final on home soil.
