The Cranes of Uganda will want to defend their 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge trophy when they meet Zanzibar in the semifinals on Friday.

Uganda are the current holders of the East African regional tournament and a win over Zanzibar will ensure a passage into the final.

Coach Moses Basena has led his men in Group B as they collected five points from three matches in their campaign.

They beat South Sudan 5-1, but drew twice against Burundi and Ethiopia to finish at number one in the group.

Looking at the runners-up in Group A, Zanzibar are a surprise package in this year’s edition and will want to go all the way to the final.

They finished at number two, behind hosts Kenya, in the group with seven points after four matches.

In their matches, they defeated Rwanda, Tanzania and drew against the hosts as well as a loss at the hands of Libya.

Ahead of this encounter, midfielder Yahya Mudathir will want to inspire the team to their first final and possibly lift the trophy.

"Unlike in the previous competitions, this time round our players started preparations two weeks earlier,” Mudathir.

“The foreign-based players joined them three days before the team left for Kenya.

"We want to go as far as the final and, God willing, win the cup."

The second semifinal clash will be staged at Moi Stadium, in Kisumu, on Friday at 15:00.
