Kenya, Zanzibar battle for CECAFA Cup glory

Kenya will be aiming to clinch the the 2017 CECAFA Senior Challenge title on home soil when they meet Zanzibar in the final at the Kenyatta Stadium in Machakos on Sunday afternoon.

Kick-off is at 15h00 local time.

The highly anticipated encounter will see the two East African sides chasing gold, as they battle for dominance in the region.

The Harambee Stars finished as winners in Group A with eight points after bagging two wins from four matches.

Beating Rwanda and Tanzania, but drawing against Zanzibar and Libya before booking their place in the showpiece with a narrow 1-0 win over Burundi in the semifinals.

“I hope the fans will make their way to Machakos on Sunday. We need the fans to support the team, because this will make the work easier for the boys," said head coach Paul Put.

“I want us to have an extra player in Machakos and this is the fans. Lets our fans support this team. We have the potential and the team looks great going into this final. I want them to come and let them come.”

Switching focus their opponents, Zanzibar have caught many by surprise and will head into the final carrying the underdogs tag.

Coming up against the hosts, the encounter will not be an easy affair as both sides will be eager to emerge victorious.

Zanzibar finished as runners up in the group with seven points; two wins, one draw and as many losses as they now aim to emerge as an East African giant.

They managed to beat Rwanda and Tanzania, but drew against Kenya and lost 1-0 to the Mediterranean Knights of Libya before dumping out defending champions Uganda in the final four.

The two nations have met 21 times with the hosts coming up trumps on 15 occasions, three draws and suffering as many defeats to the Islanders.
