Ghana coach James Kwesi Appiah has revealed his ambition to build a Black Stars team which produces CAF awards winners.

No Ghanaian player made it to the shortlist for CAF’s prestigious African Footballer of the Year and Best Player Based in Africa gongs this year.

Appiah believes building a powerful Ghana national team which challenges for major honours will change this.

“The intention has been to build a winsome team and for that reason they will need some time to mature so its difficult for them to win an accolade now,” he told Starr Sports during the unveiling of the top three nominees for the 2017 CAF awards ceremony at the Movenpick Ambassador hotel.

“But once next year or two, they will all be matured for them to be nominated for future CAF awards event.”

The last Ghanaian to be crowned the best African player was the legendary Abedi Pele, who picked up the prize three times in a row from 1991 to 1993.
