With this set to be the last PLAYER SPOTLIGHT of 2017 focusing on Vincent Aboubakar, let’s take a look back at the Cameroon attacker’s year.
Aboubakar’s 2017 began with a career high, as he scored the decisive goal in the final of the Africa Cup of Nations against Egypt back in February, helping the Indomitable Lions claim their fifth continental crown.
That was as good as it got on the international front for the bullish striker, as Cameroon failed to impress in the Confederations Cup in Russia in the middle of the year, and were unable to secure qualification for the 2018 World Cup.
In terms of his club career, 2017 has been a great year for the 25-year-old. The first half of the year saw him continue his loan spell at Turkish side Besiktas, where he scored 12 goals in 27 Super Lig appearances across 2016/17 to help the ‘Black Eagles’ retain their Turkish championship.
He then returned to parent club Porto and has enjoyed a superb run of form up to this midway point of the 2017/18 campaign, scoring 17 goals across all competitions to help his side top the Portuguese Primeira Liga table and qualify for the knockout rounds of the UEFA Champions League.
Next year, Aboubakar will hope to guide Porto to championship glory and deep into the European competition, while on the international front he will hope to see Cameroon improve as they gear up for the 2019 AFCON.
