Breaking news suggest that Nigeria’s new striking sensation Henry Onyekuru could miss the 2018 FIFA World Cup in Russia with a knee injury.

The World Cup is set to take place from 14 June to 15 July, but the 20-year-old is set to miss the global showpiece after damaging his medial ligament while playing for Anderlecht in the German Bundesliga in a 1-0 win over Eupen on December 22.

“He is possibly out for six months with a knee injury,” Anderlecht coach Hein Vanhaezebrouck has confirmed.

Onyekuru had begun to make his mark on the international stage with some key performances which saw him sign with English Premier League club Everton earlier in the season before being sent on loan to Anderlecht.

He has also impressed for his nation of late after playing in the final group B World Cup qualifier against Algeria and a friendly against Argentina in Russia.

His injury comes as a big blow for both Nigeria and Anderlecht.
